I walked past your room just like any other day.
Making my path to the restroom just beyond your door.
However, today I stopped for a minute staring into it.
In that one short minute, thoughts consumed me.
Everything seemed normal,
But my gaze was locked on the pain medications lying upon your dresser.
They’re usually stashed away in the downstairs bathroom.
Maybe you had a headache.
Everything looked ordinary so I continued my path.
Not long after that brief hesitation passing your room,
You came frantically to our mom regretting your decision.
As I sat a few feet from the conversation, I heard cries and screams.
Time in that moment ceased to continue.
My memory jumped from the cries and screams to then speeding down the road.
You lay in the back seat of the car slowly shutting down with tears dripping down your cheek.
I didn’t understand your emotional pain; I was consumed with anger and disappointment.
I thought about the brief pause I took earlier that day staring into your room.
My body knew and stopped in its tracks, yet I pushed it along my usual path.
The guilt consumes me for hating you for being unhappy.
The doctors asked if we knew what you took and I told them,
Recalling how I walked past your room just like any other day.
