By Richard Weaver

They surround us
with wings
wild for popcorn
and bread,
even a day-old
granola bar.
We toss them
upwards to air
as they hover
in the wind above;
we scatter them
with a dozen tosses
Still they stay
with us,
still they come
each morning
witness to what
we offer.

Richard Weaver volunteers with the Maryland Book Bank, CityLights, and the Baltimore Book Festival. In his spare time, he’s the official writer-in-residence at the James Joyce Pub in Baltimore. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor at the 3rd oldest Jesuit College in this country where he taught in the English Department and was the Head of Library Circulation, one of two Reference Librarians, and acting Archivist. His first published poem appeared in Poetry Magazine April 1975. In his less-than-spare time he reads for Slant magazine. In a previous life he was one of the founders of the Black Warrior Review and its Poetry Editor for the first 4 years.
