By Winter Burress

I sit by the sea
On a lonely beach
But the beach and I
Can’t truly be lonely,
Because now we’re together.

I keep the beach company
As I talk to it,
As I tell it stories
Even in the pauses
Of my breath.

The beach stays silent
And it listens
To my every word
As I pour my heart
Into the cold ocean.

As the Sun falls
Below the water,
Swallowed by waves,
I know I must leave
The beach behind.

My feet sink
Into the soft sand
As my weight
Is placed onto them,
But I linger.

I thank the beach
For sitting with me,
So I wouldn’t be alone,
And for listening
To my words.

In my heart,
As I begin to walk
It almost feels
Like the beach
Is thanking me too.
