By Devane Clarke

What do dogs dream about?
Muffled whimpers in the night
Restless legs thrash the sheet
Before rolling over next to your feet

Dogs are dreaming it has been said
About drinking from the toilet
And the lid falls on their head
Anxiety dreams perhaps
But I think not

Anthropomorphize with me instead
If I were a dog
I would dream about the chase
The blood taste of prey
Shaking off the adrenaline
Eating the soft parts first

I would dream of the warm dark den
Eyes closed tight against the light
The life affirming taste of milk
Even hind teat is better than none

I would dream of ancient ancestors
Ten thousand generations ago
The meat smell of campfires on winter nights
 A billion bones thrown
On the trash heap of time
