By N.T. Chambers

I am not
the universe
as you are not
the stars
and we are
not nearly
the tomorrow
we once
might have been.

Just us, now -
different and unsure
of the neighbors
we’d be in a year
or the couple people
would see
in twenty -
two people
trying to be one
but living
as one and a half -
somehow escaping
completeness
but still chasing
its dream
as always.

Never quite seeing
the sunrise
with each other -
instead choosing
to talk
about it
with others -
too bashful,
perhaps,
to show what
really matters
to one another -
not trusting it
to be enough.
