There before me stood the Christmas tree in all its splendor Festooned in glittering balls of many colors and designs Reflecting the glow of multi strands of lights It was a beautiful tree that reached to the top of the stairs and beyond Engulfing the surrounding area of the foyer but leaving the required Room for what use to be gaily wrapped gifts, to everyone’s delight The house was filled with excited children and the spirit of the season I immediately gave myself over to the joy of being with family Embracing each grandchild as they ran to my arms for a hug and a kiss In the sitting room fireplace was a welcoming fire as the day was brisk Toys and opened gifts were scattered about scarcely leaving room to step If I do not mention how lovely the room was decorated, I would be remiss Indeed, all the rooms of the house were bedecked with Christmas trees. Garlands of pine, candles and wreaths decorated the windows Christmas music softly serenaded us reminding us of the reason for this day As we gathered around the table for our Christmas feast We held hands and thanked God for the blessings of family and friends And for all those in need of His love and guidance most humbly did we pray As the quiet of night descended and we all lay down to sleep I wondered if all the Christmases celebrated in this old house were happy Did those who lived here before feel the love that fills this home tonight This old house is loved and cared for as are those who reside here For they know the true meaning of Christmas is to give and to share So may this house keep them safe and warm and may all sleep tight
